Una delle domande che ci appaiono di sovente nel sistema di ticketing di FoolDns Community è la richiesta della nostra motivazione per il blocco del servizio Google SafeBrowsing che è attivato normalmente sia su Firefox che su Safari e, ovviamente, Chrome.
Da anni sosteniamo che SafeBrowsing sia il motivo principale alla base dell’accordo milionario tra la Mozilla Foundation e Google, visto che il sistema permette di tracciare i comportamenti dei singoli utenti dietro ad ogni IP di fatto permettendo tramite UniqueID del singolo browser di riconoscere l’utente anche dopo la cancellazione dei Cookies e il roaming tra casa ed ufficio.
Non abbiamo mai trovato l’opportunità di mettere per iscritto le nostre perplessità, ma scopiramo con gioia di non essere soli e di avere opinioni comuni con lo stimatissimo Ha.ckers.org che in un post recentissimo spiega le sue (e nostre, oserei dire) perplessità:

One of the other things Jabra and I talked about that worried a lot of people was the fact that Google’s Safe Browsing software (built into Firefox and Chrome) could be used to track them. (…) (…)
When I started looking at Chrome I noticed two additional pieces of information that were being phoned home outside of Safe Browsing. This time, instead of it being 30 times an hour, it was more like once every 5 hours, which is still quite a bit if you ask me. The two extra pieces of data were “machineid” and “userid” – both computed information based on machine/user information. This information is sent along with a bunch of other browser information to ask Google if they should download an update. Now here’s the real question: why would Google need to know my machineid and userid to give me an update – wouldn’t the version number of my browser be enough to make that decision? I just can’t believe this isn’t used for tracking. There’s no more plausible deniability. What a perfect way to spy on people too… use their own browser against them in the name of security.
